Although my primary focus is grass cutting services during the growing season (March-November), I do undertake weeding/mulching and general garden maintenance jobs where there is availability in my appointment book. I aim to provide a service that focuses on the general appearance of gardens allowing clients to spend more time enjoying them and less time tending to them!
Mulching with wood chip is an effective method of saving water, suppressing weeds and improving the soil around plants but it also gives your garden a tidy contrasted appearance, and can reduce the amount of time spent on tasks such as watering and weeding. Mulches help soil retain moisture in summer heat whilst allowing rain to gently permeate through to the soil in winter months, the mulch provides a robust physical barrier smothering the growth of weeds whilst protecting the roots of more desirable plants during harsher winter months.
Mulching - Key Benefits
- Improves soil organic matter
- Provides nutrients
- Deters some pests
- Warmer soil temperatures encourages growth as spring arrives
- Protects plant roots from seasonal extreme hot and cold temperatures
- Encourages beneficial soil organisms
With some patience and persistence, many garden weeds can be controlled using non-chemical methods, and there are plenty of other reasons to ditch the weedkiller in favour of less costly and environmentally friendly options.
There are many ways to control weeds without using chemicals – getting good control depends on choosing the right method for the weeds in your garden.
Annual weeds are generally shallow-rooted and easy to remove by hand. However, they often produce large quantities of seed, and therefore lots of
seedlings, that require further control. The good news is that annual weed seedlings are easily smothered by mulch or temporary weed fabrics.
Perennial weeds regrow each year and often have deeper, more extensive root systems. Removing the roots gives good control but isn’t always possible. Where it isn’t, regularly cutting back or smothering top growth weakens a plant and can eventually kill it. Weed barriers are useful for containing the spread of more pernicious perennial weeds.
